The bloc's approach is not just about physical infrastructure but also includes people-to-people links. The launch of the Laos-China Railway three and a half years ago sparked a renewed push among member states to upgrade and link their rail systems. Laos, which is the only land-locked country in ASEAN, has benefited significantly from the Laos-China Railway. Not just in terms of trade and investment, but also for tourism which has received a much-needed boost. Malaysia, which is the chair of ASEAN this year, hopes to bring member countries on board to create a real ASEAN Rail Corridor.
