NRI issues in Punjab

A few days ago the Punjab Government made it known that it would not be holding its annual NRI Sammelan this year. Though no reasons were given but it was generally believed that the decision was due to the realisation that no useful purpose was served by such a Sammelan. Moreover, the NRIs continue to criticise the SAD-BJP Government as never before. It is true that such Sammelans serve no useful purpose, especially in the manner in which they are organised. Instead of a free and objective discussion on the issues and problems faced by the NRIs, the Government functionaries use this occasion to eulogise themselves and the government. Moreover, a huge sum of money is spent on hosting the NRIs and organising the function. However, one hopes the government is not giving up on the NRIs from Punjab. They are the state's ambassadors the world over and it is important to reach out to them. As for as their problems are concerned, steps like setting up NRI police stations have helped to some extent but unless there is an overall change in the systems and governance, problems of NRIs alone can't be solved in isolation. After all they are an intrinsic part of the state's polity and social fabric. As I stated earlier, the need is for the Punjab Government to reach out to them in their new abodes and then try and resolve their issues back home.
