After the fall of the Glimmerlight, Keith Scarterfield settled quietly in the UK and aligned himself with the Electronical Dreams collective. After the structured halls and sonics of the Glimmerlight, Scarterfield reinvented himself in the Patchoulilight as a listener to unfinished things. His 1993 cassette The Jart Mentality emerged from this posture. The title referred to an emerging Sagegazer doctrine - Just Another Random Thought - a way of working that avoided urgency or resolution. The pieces drifted without destination, sketches rather than statements, tones that were allowed by the Blue Crystal and the Yamaha DX-7 to remain provisional. For Scarterfield, sound was a field of electric grain in which wandering could be honored. Each track felt like a notebook page left open on a desk, waiting. . . . Among the Sagegazers, The Jart Mentality was understood as a quiet corrective to the compulsion to explain or complete. For the uninitiated, the Jart mentality named a trust in exploration without end: following an idea simply because it revealed itself, accepting fragments as sufficient, allowing meaning to surface later - or not at all. . . . The Sagegazers followed the Jart mentality not to arrive, but to remain faithful to the wandering ways of their progenitors - knowing that what has no destination is often closest to truth.
