Leo Ornstein's magical Piano Quintet, 1st movement "Allegro Barbaro". Performed by Marc-André Hamelin (piano), Mark Fewer (violin), Scott St. John (violin), Douglas McNabney (viola) and Denise Djokic (cello). Unfortunately and inexplicably, being claimed to be the masterpiece of Ornstein by his son, it's a seriously underrated and underplayed work. To be totally honest, I pondered about making a video out of this piece since its score was extremely long (260 pages), but I believed that this quintet was miraculous, amazing and substantial enough to make it available to the world to hear and to look at, plus this way I wanted to pay homage to this extraordinary composer, whose fortunately long life (109 years) made him able to create a very important plethora of elaborate musical compositions, all of which are greatly enjoyable and filled with unique ideas. Unfortunately, many notes in the piano part cannot be heard properly. One can think that Hamelin simply left them out, but it's not true, they can be heard, but very quietly (due to the unlucky microphone position, I guess).
