The Roosevelt elk (Cervus elaphus roosevelti), also called wapiti, lives in British Columbia on Vancouver Island and portions of the southwestern mainland. These social animals live in herds of up to 20 or more cows, yearlings and calves. In the autumn, during the rutting period, bulls search for groups of cows to establish a harem, from which they will separate at the end of the season. Roosevelt elk live on agricultural lands, dense old-growth rainforests, grasslands, and wetlands where they feed on sedges, grasses, ferns, berries, cedar and hemlock. In coastal valleys, logging of old-growth forests, illegal harvesting and predation are major threats, and the reason why this elk is listed as a species of special concern. All photographs were taken in the wilderness on Vancouver Island by nature and wildlife photographer Catherine Babault.
