Welcome back, traveler. Today, the city does not hide its voice. The street opens wide before you, paved in warm stone and moving shadows. Stalls spill over with color—fruit stacked in glowing reds and golds, fabric hanging like captured wind, lanterns swaying even in the daylight. The air is full. Footsteps. Laughter. Water running through narrow channels beside the road. A hundred small conversations that do not wait to be heard. You walk. The knight moves ahead of you now, her dark cape catching the light as it flows behind her. People part without noticing they have done so. The crowd accepts her as it accepts the street, the sky, the passing of time. You follow. Somewhere, a bell rings. Somewhere, a voice calls out a price you do not understand. Somewhere, music drifts and dissolves before you can find its source. And then— Everything stops. Not the people. Not the movement. Only the sound. For a single breath, the market becomes a painting. Mouths move. Water falls. Flags ripple in the breeze. But the world is silent. The key in your hand grows warm. The knight turns, just enough for you to see her expression shift. “Did you feel that?” she asks. The noise returns all at once, like a tide rushing back into the world. Voices overlap. Footsteps crash into rhythm. Life resumes as if nothing has happened. No one else reacts. No one else pauses. You stand in the middle of the street, surrounded by motion that does not belong to you. “This city doesn’t forget,” the knight says quietly. “It edits.” You look around at the smiling faces, the endless stalls, the sky that remains perfectly blue. Everything is still beautiful. Everything is still alive. But now you know— Even living worlds leave things out. You walk on. The city lets you stay. But it does not let you listen for long.
