When it’s late Fall, as another year moves into another winter season, you get in the water when you can, whenever the ocean is calm enough, even if the visibility is only moderate. The Atlantic is such an unsettled ocean, especially during the winter months. Some days are blue in the water, some days so cloudy underwater everything appears in tones of taupe and tan. Have you ever thought about what it is like to have your body be part of the natural world in moments where you are completely unobtrusive, bothering nobody? Most of the whole world is scared of humans, flees at the sight of us. A few surgeonfish – bodies shaped like ping pong paddles – swam rapidly across the rock outcroppings. All this life in the ocean – it evolved on its own. In late November, beneath a rock overhang an 8-foot-long nurse shark lay on the seafloor, gills flaring oxygen into his bloodstream, sleeping, protected by this shelter, never even knowing I was there. Most sharks must constantly move to breathe. Not nurse sharks. I was able to be there without bothering him. Staying just a moment, I pulled away and slipped back up to the surface, leaving him to his sea floor dream, his 7olm (حلم), him never even knowing I was there, or having to be afraid. Sharks have been alive on Earth for 400 million years. Imagine what their dreams are like. When they dream, is it like time travel, the speed of light?
