3 Days Exploring & Hiking Saguaro National Park

An icon of the America West, the saguaro cactus is the largest cactus in the United States, often surpassing 40 feet in height. Saguaro National Park near Tucson, Arizona is home to over TWO MILLION of them. (fun fact, the park has a Long-term Saguaro Monitoring Program which has conducted a Saguaro Census every ten years since 1990) Join me as I explore Saguaro National Park's two distinct sections, the Tucson Mountain District (west) and the Rincon Mountain District (east). From towering saguaro cacti forests to cactus gardens, hiking Wasson Peak to driving the Bajada Loop & Cactus Forest Loop, this park has something for everyone! I spent three days exploring the park's two districts while dispersed camping on nearby BLM land. Day one: I drove in from the north over Picture Rocks Road, learned about the park at Red Hills Visitor Center, and explored the Cactus Garden Trail & Desert Discovery Trail before enjoying sunset along Bajada Loop. Day two: I returned early morning to Bajada Loop to hike the Hugh Norris Trail to Wasson Peak, the highest point in the Tucson Mountain District (9.8 miles round trip). Day three: I drove an hour across Tucson to the Rincon Mountain District to experience the Cactus Forest Loop drive before enjoying sunset at Javelina Rocks.
