The Brahmaputra is the lifeline of the millions of people in India and Bangladesh. It provides an essential livelihood service in the form of fishing to the people of Assam in India, and Bangladesh. The fish from the river not only provides livelihood and food security, but also binds the cultures in the region. Numerous fish species like the anadromous Hilsa, rohu (major carp) are an important part of the diet and the culture of the people. However, a degrading Brahmaputra, decreasing fish catch, entry of big commercial fish traders and a changing climate have pushed the traditional fisheries into a corner. Transboundary cooperation on fisheries is critical if we are to conserve the fish, the river and the livelihood it provides to the people. Traditional fisherfolk are the frontline community and a critical stakeholder to the conservation and sustainable management of river Brahmaputra. This video throws light on the current status of the river, livelihood dependence of the fisherfolk and steps taken by the government to address the various issues. It highlights the need for a basin wide approach toward fisheries conservation and management in Assam bringing the need for cooperation across administrative boundaries to the forefront
