Helpful and informative links below! Here in the Southeastern United States, there is a common "weed" that tends to sprout up in the Spring. For years I have never paid attention to it much or knew what it was - as a kid, I lovingly picked a few of the bright purple flowers to put on my favorite pet's grave. As I got older, I recognized how beautiful they were all the more. When a patch began to sprout up and return every year near our sawmill, we've left it standing and not mowed it down, letting it dry and go to seed on its own without messing with it. Discovering it was a Lyreleaf Sage this year, I was curious to know if it attracted pollinators. Well, bees and butterflies, sure. But when I read it was in the Salvia-type family, I was curious to know if hummingbirds liked it too. On April 19th, 2022 my husband and I were cutting wood at the sawmill when a hummingbird buzzed behind me - I thought he was simply trying to come get my attention since the feeders were near empty! But a short time later, I heard the familiar chirp, and observed a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird hovering flower to flower and feeding! I ran back to grab my camera, and then observed a total of around 6 full feedings in an hour timespan that evening.
