How to train a puppy for a vet exam - Without lures

Does your puppy dog bite? While yes, it does! Is a sentence every puppy owner hears but dreads to answer. When dog owners visit the veterinarian for the first time, he'll examine your puppy's eye, ears, mouth, tummy, feet, and anal area. This is very stressful for the young dog, and usually, a staff member gets bit. The dog leaves frustrated, scared, or angry at its experience, thus setting the wheels in motion to owning a problematic dog to manage, especially for health care. I saw countless clients walk through the vet doors I worked at with dogs that bite or pee/poop themselves out of fear. For most clients and vet personnel, what I've described is normal. Rest assured, it's not. It saddens me to see animals react this way, especially in this era of science. It's abnormal to see videos punish or lure dogs into compliance when we can simply ask them to cooperate. Professional dog trainers build their education and careers on CEUs. We can and do train dogs to be OK with us caring for them. Please teach your dog to accept being touched, held, moved, brushed, shaved, cut (fur), poked, and prodded. It makes everybody feel relaxed, pet included, and it SAVES you MONEY; a lot of it.
