Today, we dive into the heart of Orchha and bring you a very important example of the Bundela style of architecture! Discover the Chaturburj Temple, a temple built during the mid- 16th and early 17th Century CE. The construction of the temple was initially started by Maharaja Madhukar Shah for his wife, Maharani Ganesh Kunwari. According to popular legend, the Maharani was visited by Lord Rama in her dream and was instructed to build a temple for him. However, as the temple took a long time to complete, the idol of Lord Rama was, instead, placed in her own palace. The temple was finally completed during the reign of Vir Singh Deo. There were attempts to move the idol back to the Chaturburj Temple but it is said that the idol refused to move. As a result, the temple was without any idol for a long time and, currently, houses an idol of Radhe Krishna. An interesting feature of the temple is the mix of Nagara style of temple architecture with the Bundela fort architecture. The shikhars of the temple range from pine-cone shaped towers to a dome, a feature which is visible in the Pratapeshwar Temple at Khajuraho. The inside of the temple has recessed arches in the walls and ornamented ceilings. Join us as we celebrate the Chaturburj Temple which forms an integral part of Orchha's landscape.
