Tuareg Desert Blues, a musical tradition born in the Sahara that blends poetic storytelling, hypnotic guitar lines, and rhythms shaped by life on the move. Desert Blues comes from the Tuareg people, historically nomadic communities spread across parts of Mali, Niger, Algeria, Libya, and Burkina Faso. Their music has long carried stories of travel, exile, resistance, love for the land, and survival in harsh environments. Today, many Tuareg communities face deep challenges: displacement, restricted movement across traditional routes, political instability, and the pressures of modernization on nomadic life. Music has become one of the most powerful ways these histories, struggles, and identities continue to be shared with the world. In this session, Bady Agaly, a Tuareg guitarist from Mali who learned by ear, plays one of his desert-inspired compositions. I began on the kora, then felt this melody wanted the violin instead. What you hear here is almost entirely improvised, with barely any rehearsal, guided by instinct rather than preparation. Most people associate me with the kora, but violin was actually my first instrument. I later trained on viola, competing on it through university, before returning often to violin while traveling. These instruments carry very different emotional worlds for me, and I’m still exploring how they can live side by side. This is only an introduction to Bady and to Tuareg musical culture. More collaborations and deeper conversations are coming.
