In this shiur, Rabbi Marks begins Perek 6 of Maseches Berachos, which focuses on the brachos recited before eating different foods: Mishna 6:1 – Fruits of the tree require Borei Pri Ha’etz, except wine, which has its own blessing (Borei Pri HaGafen). Fruits of the ground require Borei Pri HaAdamah, except bread, which gets Hamotzi. Rabbi Yehuda distinguishes between vegetables and grasses, but halacha follows the first opinion. If one recites HaAdamah on fruit, they fulfill their obligation, but not if they reverse it (Ha’etz on vegetables). If one says Shehakol Nihyeh Bidvaro, it works for anything. Mishna 6:2 – Foods that don’t grow from the ground (meat, fish, milk, cheese, eggs) require Shehakol. Spoiled or incomplete items (vinegar, unripe dates, locusts) are also Shehakol, though Rabbi Yehuda holds that things seen as curses don’t receive a bracha. Mishna 6:3 – When multiple fruits are before a person, one should begin with the Shiv’as HaMinim (the seven species praised in Eretz Yisrael). However, if one has a personal preference, halacha allows making the bracha on whichever fruit they most desire. 👉 This video is part of the Daily Mishna with Rabbi Marks series. 👉 Subscribe for more Torah learning and daily Mishnayos insights.
