A long, long time ago — over 2,000 years ago — people in ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome were already eating flatbreads. They would bake bread and add things like olive oil, herbs, and cheese on top. It wasn’t called pizza yet… but it was the beginning! Fast forward to the 1700s in Naples, Italy. Naples was a busy city filled with workers who needed cheap, quick meals. Street vendors sold flatbread topped with tomatoes, garlic, oil, and sometimes cheese. Tomatoes were new to Europe back then, and many people were afraid to eat them! But the people of Naples loved them. This tomato-topped bread became very popular. Then something important happened in 1889. The Queen of Italy, Queen Margherita, visited Naples. A pizza maker named Raffaele Esposito was asked to make a special pizza for her. He made one with: Red tomatoes White mozzarella cheese Green basil These colors matched the Italian flag 🇮🇹 The Queen loved it! The pizza was named “Pizza Margherita” in her honor — and it’s still one of the most popular pizzas in the world today. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Italian immigrants moved to America and brought pizza with them. At first, pizza was mostly eaten in Italian neighborhoods in cities like New York and Chicago. But after World War II, American soldiers who had tasted pizza in Italy came home wanting more. Soon, pizza spread everywhere! Today, there are many styles: 🍕 New York thin crust 🍕 Chicago deep-dish 🍕 Sicilian square pizza 🍕 Stuffed crust 🍕 Even dessert pizza! From a simple flatbread in ancient times to one of the most loved foods in the world, pizza has traveled a long and delicious journey. And it all started with bread, tomatoes, and a little creativity. The end… or maybe just the beginning of your next slice! 🍕😄
