Comparing 5 Star with 6 Star metal alloys for melting on a hotplate and using a digital thermometer to check the metals temperature. 5 Star is an alloy mostly of Tin with a few percent of Zinc and Antimony, and 6 Star Metal is an alloy of Tin and Bismuth. These metals can be easily melted on a hotplate or electric cooker. These are lead free metals suitable for hobby casting in any Prince August mould. Due to the brittleness of bismuth, care must be taken with older moulds that might have spears or pikes that need straightening after casting. We advise choosing 5 Star for those moulds instead. Each ingot weighs (5 Star) 85 grams and (6 Star) 100 grams approximately. 5 Star metal should be heated to between 350 and 380 degree celsius before casting. 6 Star metal will cast at 300 degrees celsius. The extra heat allows the metal to flow within a mould properly before cooling. All metal ingots are available on our website. Bulk discounts apply to all metal ingots.
