Released in arcades in 1997 by Sega, The Lost World-Jurassic Park is an on-rail light gun shooter running on the Sega Model 3 hardware. Based on the 1997 movie of the same name, the game appears to take place just before the movie's events, and sees Ian & Sarah go missing as the dinosaurs run wild. The players travel through Jurassic Park to locate them. The player is equipped with a tranquilizer gun that can fire 5 shots before reloading, and must shoot dinosaurs before they can get close enough to hit you. You can earn bonus points for consecutive hits and for uncommon types of hits like long range, snipe, quick shot, critical hits and more. You lose a life if hit by an attack or if you shoot humans. If you save humans from dinosaur attacks, they will give you either a special weapon (lasts 30 seconds with unlimited ammo) or an S-Powerbar, which gives you an extra life. You can also find Powerbars scattered throughout the stages-collecting 3 will also give you an extra life. Each stage has a major dinosaur that you face at some point, requiring you to hit precise targets within a few seconds to both damage it and avoid being attacked. There are also mini-challenges that, if you succeed, make progressing a little easier and award bonus points at the end of the stage. You also get bigger bonuses for clearing stages with no or few continues. There are 5 stages in all but if you choose the Expert mode at the start of the game you skip the first 2 stages and go right to stage 3 (Easy starts from the beginning while Shuffle plays a random order of stages). Complete stage 5 to complete the game. Being based on a megahit movie franchise that continues to this day, the game was quite successful in arcades. Sega made an alternate version in 1998 called "The Lost World Special-Jurassic Park" with tweaks to the cabinet (a sit-down model resembling a small enclosed pod) and different gameplay. This was the second and last Jurassic Park game Sega made for arcades (but not the last one overall). Although there were several console games based on the movie, there are no console versions of this game.
