Black swallow wort (Cynanchum louiseae) is a hassle for a lot of gardeners. But it’s even worse than that in some regions. Do yourself and your neighbors a favor and get rid of it. Not only is it annoying the way it appears everywhere but it outcompetes native and other plants. Worse—it resembles milkweed and monarch butterflies are tricked into laying their eggs on it and it’s toxic to the emerging caterpillars. Note: if you have this in a place you can’t dig it out, I personally would use weed killer on it. Spray the leaves in a targeted way (not broadly) and stay vigilant. This stuff is persistent!
