This afternoon concert at the renowned Jazz in Marciac Festival in southern France was the last stop on a European tour and although a new band, the musical empathy between the leader, now himself passing along knowledge to younger players, and his rhythm section of bassist Jonathon Muir-Cotton and drummer Tyson Jackson is evident. The 90-minute concert is a memoir expressed through music. Sands and Company play three tunes from what was then his latest album, "Embracing Dawn". There is “Sand Dune”, which Sands played at a 2014 live recording session at the Village Vanguard with McBride's trio. And delving deeper into his history are Dave Brubeck's "Strange Meadowlark", prefaced by a story of a 12-year-old Sands meeting the composer, and readings of songs by two very different inspirations: Cedar Walton's "Bolivia" and "Never Too Much" by Luther Vandross. An encore of Charlie Parker's "Anthropology" is met with cheers. Jazz is music of the moment and the French audience was treated to a very special one. Now you will be as well.
