There’s plenty to unpack in the drain vs. drainless tummy tuck debate and more than can be covered in this video. I could make a 30 minute video and still not cover it but I try to hit the highlights here. I have friends and colleagues whom I respect on both sides of this. This procedure is a focus of my practice so I thought I would offer my perspective. This video just represents my opinion based on years of experience including experience with both techniques. IN MY OPINION, leaving behind 1-2 liters of extra fluid for your body to evacuate can potentially compromise the ability of your surgeon to achieve optimal contours and skin retraction during the critical early postoperative period. Now, again, I know there will be surgeons who will agree and disagree. I think when we start making claims that a technique is “better” we don’t want to lose sight of what matters most. AT THE END OF THE DAY, THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THE RESULTS. If you like your surgeon’s results and they use a drainless technique, that’s great! If you like your surgeon’s results and they use drains, hey that’s ok too! I just think it’s important not to muddy the issue too much with seductive catch terms - whether it be related to a techniques or a technologies - and as best we can keep the dialogue honest and not too “sales-y”... again, just one fella’s opinion...
