The Italian Opera composer Giuseppe Sarti is now largely forgotten. However,in his heyday he was extremely popular and the theme for this set of Variations comes from one of his most memorable melodies "Come un'agnello" from the Opera entitled Fra i due Litigante which literally translated means While two dispute the third enjoys. Mozart met with him on a trip to Vienna and wrote enthusiastically to his father "I have played a great deal to him and composed variations on an air of his which pleased him exceedingly".
