BART is kicking off the holiday season by inviting the public to take transit to their shopping destinations via the newly remodeled Powell St. Station. Powell St. Station connects riders to the heart of downtown San Francisco’s shopping and hotel district and the modernization project reinforces Powell St. as a gateway station and enhances the quality of life in the area. The project offers a number of upgrades and improvements to the station’s function, safety and security, capacity, sustainability, appearance, and customer experience. The modernization includes remodeling and reopening public restrooms at the station (completed in February 2022), installing new LED lighting throughout the station, installing five-foot-tall glass fare barriers, relocating fare gates to improve passenger flow, moving ticket vending machines from the middle of the concourse to the perimeter walls to improve line-of-sight, installing new wayfinding signage and installing a modern, metallic grid ceiling with energy efficient lights on the concourse level. The modernization also includes illuminated ceiling artwork by San Francisco-based artist Stephen Galloway that highlights the new open space at the main entrance to the station and the relocation of mosaic art panels created by Larkin Street Youth Services. Powell St. Station Modernization improvements were funded by State of California Proposition 1B funds, BART Measure RR funds, San Francisco County Transportation Authority Proposition K funds, and through a funding partnership with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.
