Statement: The frequency of a spectral line in the characteristics X-ray spectrum varies directly as the square of the atomic number of the element emitting it. Today, we know that the atomic number gives the number of protons (positive charges) in the nucleus. This was the discovery made by Henry Gwyn-Jefferies Moseley.
