Dr. Jeff talks about drinking energy drinks and discusses the issues with mixing energy drinks and alcohol. http://www.quixana.com Dr. Jeff: Jennie welcome, how are you doing this morning? Jennifer: Great, thank you Dr. Jeff. So I have a question. Often if I have a really early start to the day, later on in the day I'm needing a little energy kick and I drink one, maybe two or three, energy drinks. But I've heard recently that they're not all too good for you. Is this true? Dr. Jeff: One energy drink a day is probably not going to be too dangerous for you. However what most people don't realize is that most energy drinks contain four to five times the caffeine or other caffeine-like stimulants than one soda. So if you're drinking two and three energy drinks a day, you're getting a whopping dose of caffeine or other stimulants. And that can be dangerous; that can cause heart racing, chest pain, shortness of breath. It can cause seizures, can cause high blood pressure. There are a lot of medical conditions that can be caused by that. So if you're drinking three energy drinks, you multiply that by five, that's like drinking fifteen cans of soda a day probably. That's probably a bit excessive. So what you want to do is really, if you're going to drink energy drinks, is drink them in moderation. Jennifer: So I haven't experienced any of these negative symptoms. Can they build up? Or if I haven't experienced them does that mean I'll be fine? Dr. Jeff: Well it's not that they'll build up, because you're going to metabolize all of your caffeine and other stimulants you know shortly after you drink them. But it doesn't mean you're immune to the side effects. You may be fine for a while, and then all the sudden you start having these side effects, because your body is more sensitized to the stimulant effect. Jennifer: Do you have any alternatives that you can recommend that will help get me through the day? Maybe a natural or healthy alternative? Dr. Jeff: Well of course the best thing to do of course is to try to get your rest, get enough sleep. You can drink coffee or tea, but don't overdo it. First and foremost look at your daily routine, and see if you can get a little bit more sleep, so you don't need any energy boosting beverages. Jennifer: I have some friends who, when they go out partying on the weekend, love to mix their alcohol with energy drinks. Is this a bad idea? Dr. Jeff: Yeah that's a very bad idea, and you're right it's very common these days. Problem is that when people are out drinking, alcohol as you know is a depressant, so it tends to cause people to become sleepy. Mixing it with energy drinks gives you that little energy boost from the energy drinks, so that the effects of the alcohol is not really felt right away. And the problem as it leads to more drinking. People think they can drink more alcohol and it's not really affecting them, because the energy drink is counterbalancing it, but it's not really true. And the alcohol level is building up your system. Unfortunately we see a lot of people with alcohol poisoning, because they overdid it, because they didn't have the sedative effects of alcohol telling them that they need to stop. Jennifer: Oh wow, so mixing the energy drinks with alcohol can allow you to keep drinking and drinking and not really feel it until all the sudden it's too late, and you've had way too much. Dr. Jeff: Exactly. Jennifer: Oh dear, that's not too good. Alright no mixing energy drinks with alcohol. But I've seen that you can actually buy on the shelves in grocery stores anywhere actually companies are releasing alcohol and energy drinks in one container. How can they get away with doing that if it's so bad for you? Dr. Jeff: They are marketing these mixed beverages already, and it's not a good idea, and they're not healthy, and they can actually be very dangerous. I know that there are a lot of people trying to get them pulled off the market.
