കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂര് ചേരമാൻ ജുമാ മസ്ജിദ്നെ പറ്റി ഒരു ഐതിഹ്യം ഉണ്ട് അവസാനത്തെ ചേര ചക്രവർത്തി രാജ്യം വീതിച്ചു വേണ്ടപ്പെട്ടവർക്ക് കൊടുത്തശേഷം ഇസ്ലാം മതം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്നും പോയ പെരുമാൾ അറേബ്യൻ തീരത്ത് ഒരു തുറമുഖത്തിൽ ഇറങ്ങിയെന്നും ജെദ്ദാഹ് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് വെച്ച് പ്രവാചകനെ കണ്ടെന്നും പ്രവാചകനാൽ വിശുദ്ധനാക്കപ്പെട്ട അദ്ദേഹം അറേബ്യ രാജാവിന്റെ സഹോദരി വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു അഞ്ചുവർഷം സുഖമായി വസിച്ചു പിന്നെ കേരളത്തിൽ ഇസ്ലാം മതം പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കാൻ പുറപ്പെട്ടു എന്നാൽ ആ ദൗത്യം നിർവഹിക്കുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് മാർഗ്ഗമൊ അദ്ദേഹം ചരമഗതി പ്രാപിക്കുകയും അറേബ്യൻ കരയിൽ ഒരിടത്ത് സംസ്കരിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു, പെരുമാളിന്റെ കത്തുമായി കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂരിൽ കപ്പലിറങ്ങിയവർക്ക്‌ അവിടുത്തെ ഭരണാധികാരികൾ ഒരു പള്ളി പണിയുന്നതിനുള്ള അനുവാദം നൽകി, ആ പള്ളിയാണ് ചേരമാൻ ജുമാ മസ്ജിദ് ( എന്നാൽ നബി തിരുമേനിയുടെ കാലഘട്ടവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തി പരിശോധിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഈ കഥയ്ക്ക് ചരിത്രപരമായ അംഗീകാരം ഇല്ല എന്നാണ് പല ചരിത്രകാരന്മാരും പറയുന്നത് (കേരള ചരിത്രം എ.ശ്രീധരമേനോൻ ) There is a legend about Cheraman Juma Masjid in Kodungallur The last Chera emperor converted to Islam after dividing the kingdom and giving it to his relatives.
