About This Video : RRBs are government-owned scheduled commercial banks that operate at the regional level in different states of India. Their main objective is to provide credit and banking facilities to small and marginal farmers, agricultural laborers, artisans, and rural entrepreneurs. Established Under: Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976 First RRB: Prathama Bank (Uttar Pradesh), 1975 Initiated By: Government of India on the recommendations of the Narasimham Committee (1975) RRBs are jointly owned by: Central Government: 50% State Government: 15% Sponsor Bank: 35% Objectives of RRBs: Provide banking services in rural and semi-urban areas Promote financial inclusion Offer low-interest credit to rural poor, especially farmers and artisans Mobilize rural savings Develop the rural economy through financial support Functions of RRBs: Accept deposits Provide loans and advances Fund agriculture and allied activities (dairy, poultry, fisheries) Support self-help groups (SHGs) and microfinance Facilitate government welfare schemes (PMJDY, DBT, etc.) As of 2024, there are 43 RRBs in India (down from 196 due to amalgamations). Operate across rural, semi-urban, and remote areas. Regulated by NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) and the RBI.
