Tom Bombadil: The Unlikely Hero for Creatives

It has been a while since I made a video. I recorded this last summer, but just haven't been able to take the time to edit it. But here it is! A little different from the usual things on this channel. Let's talk about the Lord of the Rings... Tom Bombadil is one of Tolkien's most puzzling characters: powerful enough to command the Old Forest and shrug off the One Ring, yet completely uninterested in the great struggle against Sauron. But what if that disinterest is precisely the point? How was Tom Bombadil's existence such a mishmash of contradictions? Who or what even was he? This video explores Tom as the antithesis of everything Sauron represents. Where the Dark Lord seeks domination through destruction, Tom offers a different kind of power entirely: one rooted in song, stewardship, and an almost radical contentment with the world as it is, not as we want it to be. What does this mean for us as artists? What can we learn from Tom Bombadil about how we create, and why we create? Sometimes resistance doesn't look like a battle.
