What can be done to revive the engine of free trade? Global trade policy is in poor health. The relevance and integrity of the WTO have been eroded. Trade wars and commercial frictions have replaced the past spirit of gradually expanding the scope for global trade freedom. Globalisation, says some, is dying. Frank Lavin makes the case in a new paper that there are many things that can be done to advance trader liberalisation – even in a milieu that is generally hostile to free trade. He outlines five initiatives that could be taken by central trade powers in the world – including the EU and the US. Join us for a one-on-one conversation between Frank Lavin and Fredrik Erixon. Frank Lavin is a former Under Secretary for International Trade in the US Department of Commerce, and he’s been working as Political Director in the White House and in senior positions at the US State Department – including a stint as the US Ambassador to Singapore. Frank regularly writes about trade and foreign policy, and founded Export Now – an e-commerce platform in China.
