On a northern part of the Island of Sodor, there is a tram engine named Toby who lives and works on his own little railway with his coach, Henrietta. He has cowcatchers and sideplates to help prevent accidents, which is a unique look for a steam engine. Sadly, Toby and Henrietta have both seen better days, as the amounts of passengers and freight they take have begun to decline. The passengers would rather travel by car or bus, while companies send their goods in trucks. One day, a stout gentleman, who is actually Sir Topham Hatt, his wife, and their two grandchildren visit the railway while on holiday. The two children note that Toby looks unusual for an engine, and Sir Topham Hatt tells them that he is a tram engine. Sir Topham Hatt's granddaughter Bridget accidentally insults Toby by asking if he is electric, but Sir Topham Hatt explains that Toby is a steam tram. The whole family take a ride in Henrietta, which makes her quite happy, although Toby is still upset about being called electric. Afterwards, Sir Topham Hatt thanks Toby for the lovely journey, with Toby remarking that the gentleman knows how to speak to engines quite nicely. The family returns every day for two weeks, sometimes they rode with the conductor in Henrietta, or sometimes in empty freight cars. On their last day, the family is invited to ride with Toby's crew in his cab. Everyone is sorry when the family has to leave, but they promise to come back soon. As the months pass, Toby finds himself carrying fewer cars and fewer passengers. Then, one day, Toby's driver informs the tram engine that the manager has decided to close down the line. A lot of people visit the line to ride in Henrietta one last time; although they treat the occasion like a celebration, Toby and his driver know it is anything but that. The passengers bid Toby a final farewell after the journey is over and Toby, sad as can be, returns to his shed, feeling lonely and unwanted. The following morning, Toby is woken up by his driver, who has just received something exciting: an important letter from the stout gentleman, implying that it may be good news!
