I end up hiking trails 2 and 3 The Reserve Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve (JMBR) is located in Kesrouan District, Lebanon, on the shoulders of the western slopes of Mount Lebanon Chain (34° 03’ 43.93” N, 35° 46’ 09.84” E), overlooking the Mediterranean Sea to the West. It covers an area of 6500 hectares, at an altitude ranging between 350 meters in the North-West and 1,700 meters in the South-East. Its main villages are: Yahchouch, Qehmez, Jouret el Thermos, Nahr ed Dahab, Ghbale, Aabri, and Chouwan. Jabal Moussa and surrounding villages became part of the UNESCO Network of Biosphere Reserves under the Man and Biosphere (MAB) program in 2009. As part of the MAB program, JMBR addresses human livelihood improvement and nature conservation by combining natural sciences with social sciences, economics, and education. https://www.jabalmoussa.org/ Qornet el Mzaar Trail Trail 2: Qornet el Mzaar Trail Level: Moderate Distance: 3.5 km Duration: 3h hike Start point: Qehmez entrance Endpoint: Qehmez entrance Itinerary: Start your hike at Baydar el-shawk/Qehmez entrance (1400m). Moderate uphill hike reaching Bir el Masbek, an old water cistern found carved in the karstic rocks. Uphill detour from Bir el Masbek towards Qornet el Mzar (1600m), the highest summit of Jabal Moussa that shelters ruins of a Roman temple and amazing 360⁰ view on the diverse landscapes surrounding Jabal Moussa; a true mix of nature and culture. Easy downhill hike towards the Cross of Yahchouch that was erected by Yahchouch youths on the summit of Jabal Moussa, overlooking the historical Adonis Valley. Easy downhill way back to reach the peony site. Back to Baydar el-shawk/ Qehmez main entrance (1400m). Description: This walk represents a true journey in time. You'll learn how our grandfathers managed to survive on isolated land and discover the marks our ancestors left on the mountain's steep slopes... A walk through open and dense mixed forest, where karstic landscapes of the mountain summit can be admired. The highlight of the walk is “Qornet el Mzar”, the highest summit of Jabal Moussa (1600 m) that shelters ruins of a Roman temple and amazing 360⁰ views on the diverse landscapes surrounding Jabal Moussa. El-Byut Stroll Trail 3: El-byut stroll Level: Moderate Distance: 2.9km average Duration: 3h30min hike Start point: Qehmez entrance Endpoint: To be combined with another trail to reach an entrance Itinerary: Start at Baydar el-shawk/ Qehmez main entrance (1400 m). Moderate hike along the “El-byut stroll”: from Baydar el-shawk passing by Bir el Masbek and arriving at three old houses known as Al Byut (Byut/ Old houses site- 1350m). Optional: After the Byut, walk up to the Cross of Yahchouch where the historical Adonis Valley can be admired, then back to the Byut site on the same track. An additional 30 min should be foreseen for this detour. Take the same trail back to Baydar el-shawk/ Qehmez main entrance, or combine it with another trail to reach Mchati entrance or Yahchouch side entrance.
