The Sermon on the Mount discourse concludes in chapter seven. Chapter seven begins with Jesus commanding that his disciples “Judge not, that you be not judged.” (Matthew 7:1) This is followed by teachings on holiness, prayer, and salvation. In commenting on Jesus’ teaching on avoiding judgment, Fr. Menard states, “Men’s actions are very difficult to judge, their true appreciation depends greatly on the motivations that produce them, and these motivations are invisible to our eyes. Is it not true that often we discover, after the fact, that certain actions that seemed to accuse them, were in reality acts of virtue?” This is because, he adds, “A certain deficiency that we notice can be in God’s eyes but a simple material imperfection that does not have the same gravity it has in our eyes. Man sees the appearances, God sees the reality that is going on in man’s hearts.” Instead of judging and gossiping about our neighbors’ motives, often behind their backs, may we praise their hidden virtues. Eusebe Menard, Thirst for Love (New Hope: St. Martin of Porres, 2016), 34.
