The Wallingford BunkFest

Back in July, when 6024 took a turn on the VSOE Pullmans, we tried a shot from the bridge to the west of Cholsey station . The resulting video was nothing great, but we were intrigued by the view of the track of the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway as it emerged from the trees and curved away from the main line. Looking on the C&WR website we found that, although the railway's usual motive power is a class 08 shunter, they were hiring in GWR Pannier Tank 6430 from the Llangollen Railway and that it would be running over several weekends in August and September. Sunday 5th September was 6430's last day of operation. It also marked the end of the Wallingford BunkFest, a three day music and dance festival held at various venues in the town, including the railway. A morning of intermittent drizzle gave way to a sunny afternoon and evening that showed the railway at it's best. On paper an hourly service over a two-mile line seems rather slow, but with a smart turnaround at either end the time soon passes and the footpath that parallels the line for almost its entire length gives some very good vantage points.
