Funeral for Carolyn Henderson

Carolyn Jane Yuill Henderson passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 11, 2025. She was born November 16, 1942, in Morristown, New Jersey to James Edward Yuill and Aileen Eleanor Watts Yuill. Carolyn is survived by her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Robert Scott and Cherie Henderson with Josh Owensby and Megan with Bo, Emmy Jo and Jay; Laura Moffett and Jacob with Blakely, Isla, and Anniston; and Morgan Boynton and Holden with Hutton; Bruce Henderson with Taylor and Mackenna; sister, Betsy and husband, Pete McKinnell, with niece Heather and Chuck Myers, Natalie and Tyler; and nephews, Paul and Jennifer McKinnell, Jack and Owen; and brother-in-law, Ronald Babb. After graduating from high school in Jacksonville, FL, where she was selected the female Most Likely to Succeed, An Outstanding Senior, editor of the Yearbook, and Anchor Club Girl of the Year, she attended George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN, for two years. She met her husband Robert Walter Henderson in Nashville at West End Methodist Church in the College Class. They were married in 1962 and came to Oak Ridge where Bob worked in the Computer Science Department for 36 years. During the early years of her marriage, Carolyn raised two boys and volunteered in many activities at First United Methodist Church. She was also active in the YWCA as treasurer and vice president, president of Linden PTA and active with the Robertsville PTA. The family spent two years in Vienna, Austria from 1971-1972 while Bob was employed by the International Atomic Energy Agency. While in Austria they traveled extensively, and Carolyn participated in the United Women’s Guild. After returning from Austria, Carolyn completed her college degree from the University of Tennessee College in Business Administration. She then worked for fourteen years as the business manager for medical practices. After retiring Carolyn returned to her volunteer work in her church and community. She was on the Contact Helpline Board and a volunteer for the Helpline for eight years. She served on the YWCA Board as finance director. She had previously served on the board as treasurer, administrative vice president, and personnel chair. She was a member of Monarch, an auxiliary to Girl’s Inc, where she chaired the wreath sale for many years and was treasurer. Carolyn was a volunteer with Learning Ally (Recording for the Blind) as a reader and monitor until the center closed. She served as the interim director of the Free Medical Clinic in 2016. She then served on the board, chairing the Outreach Committee, as treasurer, and helping with many projects. Carolyn served in many roles at FUMC being a charter member and first president of the Fellowship Class. She served on many committees, chaired Family Life Activities, was Youth Coordinator, Sunday School teacher, chair of finance and trustees, co-chaired the formation of the Enduring Gifts with her husband, and served on several Future Facilities and Strategic Planning Committees. She was a member of United Methodist Women from age 20 and served as president, treasurer, and circle chair for many years. Her favorite activities were sewing and needlework, gardening, reading, and playing bridge which were life long activities.
