Impressions: Sony A7S - Timelapse, Slow Mo and High ISO

I recently picked up a Sony A7S and have been testing it's video capabilities and timelapse functions. This is some of the resulting footage and below are my thoughts and impressions of the camera! Setup: Sony A7S (http://goo.gl/pMQ0pj) Metabones EF-E adaptor Mark IV (http://goo.gl/HoZm82) Canon 16-35 f/2.8 (http://goo.gl/4GvlYu) Canon 24-70 f/2.8 (http://goo.gl/xPrNan) Rokinon 14 f/2.8 (http://goo.gl/uzJlg5) First off I love how light it is! It is weird to hold after going from a large Canon DSLR and some of the button choices and layouts will definitely take some getting used to but all in all not too bad. Lenses are an issue but all of that stuff you can find in other reviews. Onto my specialty! Timelapse: First off I have to mention that at the time of shooting this there was no readily available external intervalometer or cable so I had to use the Sony timelapse app (10$). It is absolutely terrible! I never made it over 400 frames and most of the time it would crash and stop shooting. Perfect example is the second last milkyway shot (1:37) you can see a jump as I only noticed 20 minutes after it stopped that it wasn't working. An external intervalometer will fix this so I can't judge it too much on that. I didn't notice any abnormal aperture flicker or anything crazy like that. My biggest concern is the buffer speed inbetween photos as well as compatibility with current and future timelapse accessories. The next thing that I have seen complained about but I didn't seem to worry about is battery life. The opening scene (milkyway shot) was about 3 hours long and I went through 70% of a single battery for that. 90% of the timelapses I shoot won't go longer than that in which case I can just use one of my canon dslr's with a battery grip which will last forever. So to me that is a non issue but I definitely can't recommend this camera for long term shots (6+ hours) Slow Motion (high frame rate): To me this is very exciting! I have never had a camera that can shoot 60 or 120 frames per second. This camera shoots 60 perfectly at 1080p and 120 at 720p. The upscale is very noticable on a big screen but not too bad on youtube. Having worked with timelapse mainly I can tell that my editing skills are not nearly as proficient with the video files as my timelapses as they look much better pre-Youtube. Will take some getting used to but the s-log picture profile make its all worth it. Currently only usable at ISO 3200 or above (ISO 800 equivalent with PP1) is managable but not ideal. Having an external recorder (shogun once it comes out) will make this functionality immensely better. So far it has been extremely fun to use and I am looking forward to testing it further! High ISO: This is the best part of this camera. It is mind boggling how clean the super high ISO's are. I didn't do an absolutely wonderful job of showing this unfortunately but I hope you will be able to see anyways. The first shot is solid :) However 4 different cars drove by during the shot so if you noticed some awkward flickering in the sky its because I clone stamped the foreground but couldn't fix the sky. The second milky way shot there is a few noticable dead/hot pixels in the foreground. The Final shot looks much noisier than it needs to be. The reason for this is I was shooting above a geiser and the steam was messing with the atmosphere adding a ton of noise! That combined with the flickering (attempted fix) from the vehicles driving by doesn't help. Anyways thanks for watching and hit up the comments if you have any questions! Http://joelschat.com
