Another name for this castle is Castillo de Belalcázar, the name of the village in which it stands. The late Gothic castle was built on the site of a Roman fort. It was built in the second half of the 15th century and its striking 47-metre-high keep makes it the tallest castle in Spain and Portugal. For the first few centuries, the castle was used as the residence of the Counts of Belalcázar. In the 16th century, the castle was extended with a Renaissance residential section. At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was taken by French troops. They converted it into a warehouse, causing it to quickly fall into disrepair. It was also damaged by artillery fire. What followed was a long period of decay and looting. The castle has been owned by the Junta de Andalucia since 2008. They had consolidation work carried out between 2018 and 2020.
