Starting a business is something many people only dream about, but for Braswell student Kennedy Laster, that dream has already become a reality. From school events to community gatherings, Kennedy’s cotton candy business, Candy Curls, is quickly gaining attention for its colorful presentation and unique flavors. What began as a simple idea at home has grown into a fully established small business, supported by her family and driven by her determination to create something of her own. “In the swirl of sugar and color, this cotton candy isn’t just a sweet treat,” Coach Kent Laster said. “It’s the foundation of a business Kennedy has built herself.” Coach Laster said the process began with Kennedy and her mother taking the initiative to officially launch the company. From obtaining an LLC to working with a mentor, Kennedy learned the steps needed to turn an idea into a legitimate business. “She didn’t even ask me about it at first,” Coach Laster said. “They worked it out together, and next thing I knew, she was booking birthday parties and events and serving cotton candy.” Kennedy said flexibility was the main motivation behind starting Candy Curls. As a busy student, she struggled to find a traditional job that fit her schedule. “I wanted to work on my own time,” Kennedy said. “I was scrolling on Facebook and saw cotton candy and thought, ‘Can you do this as a job?’ I started researching, found a mentor, and that’s how everything began.” With eye-catching packaging and a personal touch, Candy Curls has already attracted the attention of students, teachers, and community members. But Kennedy said the success hasn’t come without hard work. Balancing school responsibilities while managing orders and events takes dedication and discipline. For Kennedy, Candy Curls represents more than just a business. It is proof that with initiative, creativity, and support, students can turn small ideas into real opportunities.F
