Today's FSRS webinar concerns the political situation in the islands of Faroes and Shetland, particularly autonomy. We have two presentations: 1) A Faroese Road Towards Independence by Professor Hans Andrias Sølvará who is Professor of History at the Faculty of History and Social Science at the University of Faroe Islands. He has written several books about the political history of the Faroe Islands. His PhD thesis was about the emergence of a secession movement in the Faroe Islands in the period from 1906 to 1925. 2) Shetland Autonomy by John Goodlad. John is a passionate advocate of autonomy for Shetland, largely as a consequence of his many inspirational visits to Faroe. He has worked in the seafood industry throughout his career. Initially working for the Shetland Fishermen’s Association, he then became a fish farmer, specialising in the production of organic salmon and halibut. John now advises two international Seafood Investment Funds whose focus is investing in sustainable fishing and fish farming projects in the developing world. John is also an author. Following on the success of his last book, The Salt Roads, he is working on a new book that looks at the future of the global seafood industry. This book, called Food from the Sea – The Future of Seafood, will be published in June.
