The uncertainty principle, formulated by German physicist Werner Heisenberg in 1927, is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics. It states that there is a fundamental limit to the precision with which certain pairs of physical properties of a particle, such as position and momentum, can be simultaneously known. Mathematically, the uncertainty principle is often expressed as Δx * Δp ≥ ħ/2, where Δx is the uncertainty in position, Δp is the uncertainty in momentum, and ħ (h-bar) is the reduced Planck constant. This means that the product of the uncertainties in position and momentum for a particle cannot be smaller than a certain value, regardless of the measurement apparatus used.
