Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals! A bit of a different one for you folks today! I've been curious about Lightning Boy Audio for a good while now, and I finally got round to ordering one of Mike's products...the 2020 Instrument Transformer. I've heard mixed things about this little box - some have said it's wonderful for adding some harmonic colouration; others have said it does nothing at all. So which is it...?? The 2020 is a 1:1 passive transformer-in-a-box, designed to be placed on your pedalboard. Transformers are more commonly used in pro-audio equipment, so the 2020 is designed to give you a little bit of that flavour in your rig. Today, I'll be throwing seven different tests its way to see where it shines and where it maybe doesn't: high and low output guitars; with a boost in the front end; in the FX loop of an amp; on a microphone signal; on a bass guitar; and on a mono synth. Phew...!! What do you think? Subtle but useful? Or negligible effect on anything? Comment below! Guitars used: Gronlund R16 Redeemer Junior w/ TV Jones Ful-Fidelity Ray Butts Filter'Tron Gretsch Duo Jet w/ TV Jones T-Armonds Fender Strat w/ Fralin Real '54s Gibson SG Standard w/ OX4 Low-Wind PAFs 1980s Hondo 830 Deluxe Bass Amplified guitars recorded through a Hughes & Kettner Puretone (Fane A60; Aston Spirit Condenser and sE R1 Ribbon) and a Dr Z DB4 (Celestion AlNiCo Cream; 70s MD441) with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic. (Same setup for Ashdown Fallen Angel 180). Using the 2020 on the mic signal was the MD441 on a Cornell Romany Plus. jp@joeperkins.co.uk Vector images by freepik.com
