2008, PS3, X360. Rating: 3 out of 4 stars Burnout has always had an anarchic spirit to it that worked very well in its self-contained chaos. Developer Criterion, perhaps realizing there was only so much you could do with that model, decided to try something different by going with a sandbox approach. There’s an entire city to explore in this case and the design in varied enough to give the gamer a sense of exploration. There are 120 events in the game and apart from timed events to get custom cars, there are four key types of events: Races, stunt runs, marked man and road rage. All of them have the Burnout spirit in them and the different environments and destinations do provide a sense of variety to the game. On the other hand, the desire to cause willful chaos for the sake of chaos has been tamped down because of the sandbox approach. It’s kind of a shame because that was part of Burnout’s appeal. That has been taken away, but there are some flashes of it throughout. The game’s structure isn’t too difficult; you complete events and keep upgrading your license. As you progress, the events get tougher and the AI gets smarter, as well. This encourages the player to obtain better cars and learn the map. Paradise City itself is well-designed and can be broken into three areas: city, mountain and the rural towns. The city is the biggest chunk of the game, obviously, and most of the time spent will be there. Would have been nice to see more detail for the rural towns and mountains, but what is provided works. There’s also a terrific soundtrack full of Burnout tunes, current and classical music with the ability to turn them on and off at your leisure. Visually, the game is solid with very few tears or framerate issues. The cars handle pretty well, but I would have liked a sharper contrast with the types of vehicles. You can get by using the same type of car throughout most of the game’s challenges without too much trouble. It’s a shame the developers didn’t try this model again because it worked pretty well in Burnout. Maybe, in a sense, the sandbox is kind of limiting in its own way. A story mode with some kind of stakes and more events would have been nice, but as a way to pass the time, Burnout Paradise more than gets the job done.
