Subscribe to Reel South and never miss a new documentary: https://tinyurl.com/3rtxj4kd In 1972, Ukrainian-born George Voronovsky relocated permanently from Philadelphia to Miami, settling into a modest room on the third floor of the Colony Hotel, with a window overlooking a vibrant stretch of South Beach. Over the next decade, he transformed that small space into a kaleidoscopic environment overflowing with hundreds of artworks. One journalist at the time described it as a “defiant oasis of color and light”, with walls densely layered in paintings, hand-carved Styrofoam sculptures, and rainbow-colored flowers fashioned from tin cans. Around six years into this artistic metamorphosis, Miami photographer Gary Monroe caught sight of the fantastical scene from the sidewalk. He soon befriended Voronovsky and, over time, became the primary steward of his legacy, preserving his art and personal archive for more than four decades. Featuring interviews with Monroe, High Museum curator Katherine Jentleson, and rare archival footage shot by Voronovsky himself, George V. paints an intimate portrait of a visionary life shaped by displacement, memory, and an unyielding drive to create.
