In this episode of The Evaluation Couch, Maria Montenegro partners with Karen Jackson to talk about one of the most complex and transformative years in the program evaluation and monitoring & evaluation (M&E) field. Karen, the 2025 President of the American Evaluation Association, shares about her experience leading one of the largest Voluntary Organizations for Professional Evaluation during a period of major change and uncertainty. Over the past year, the evaluation field has faced several disruptions. Changes in funding priorities, government decisions, and institutional restructuring have impacted various professionals working in program evaluation, monitoring and evaluation (M&E), and adjacent roles. These developments have also raised certain important questions regarding the future of evidence, research, and the role evaluators play in shaping informed decision-making. In this conversation, Karen also talks about going through these challenges while also supporting a global community of evaluators. She discusses the pressures the AEA faced, the emotional and professional realities experienced by many evaluators, and why collective leadership is important in times of major disruption. An important moment that was also explored in this episode was the “Morning After Coalition", a call that encouraged evaluators and professional organizations to come together and respond collectively rather than quietly facing the threats related to evidence-based practice. Karen also shares the leadership lessons she gained during her presidency, including the importance of curiosity, collaboration, and building strong relationships across the evaluation community. If you are interested in evaluation practice, evaluation careers, research methods, and the evolving role of evidence in public decision-making, this episode will give you valuable insights into how the evaluation field is adapting and moving forward.
