Washington State has declared a state of emergency over the invasive Asian Gypsy Moths. Here is what you need to know: Already in a race to stop the Asian Giant Hornet from spreading across the state, Washington has found itself in a battle with another invasive insect. Gov Jay Inslee has issued an emergency proclamation against the “Imminent Ranger” of a gypsy moth infestation in parts of the states Snohomish country. So why are these moths such a big deal. I watched the hunch back of notre dame as a kid and gypsies seemed like a ton of fun, and kinda text he. It turns out that Gypsy Moths pose an imminent ranger because they devour the leaves of more than 300 species of trees and shrubs. For Evergreen trees, losing their leaves tends to result in Beth, and for many other plants this defoliation leaves them more susceptible to other pests. According to the Washington state department of agriculture “the gypsy moth is one of the most destructive forest pests introduced into the United States. ”. Female gypsy moths can lay hundreds of eggs and fly over 25 miles. Which means that if Washington is unsuccessful in stymieing their growth, the Asian Gypsy Moth could become a thread to the entire country. So what tools does the state have in its arsenal to combat this winged menace? The Governor has authorized the use of an aerial spraying of a pesticide known as Bacillus Thuringiensis Kurstaki or BTK for Short. When caterpillars eat leaves sprayed with it, they stop eating and then try. But it has minimal toxicity to birds, mammals, and other insects like honeybees. In addition to spraying BTK, Washington has a search and deep troy method of eradicating the pest. What a special task force will do is they’ll control the moths by monitoring them with pheromone traps. Then they’ll locate and deep troy their egg clusters. Its crucial to prevent theses moths from establishing a permanent presence because they have no natural predators in the state, so their numbers can quickly get out of hand.
