Any lump in the anorectal area could be a benign condition or could be a cancerous anal condition. But more often it is a benign condition. Benign means a non-cancerous condition called as hemorrhoids, sentinal piles of a fissure, or a thrombosed pile mass or varicose lesion of the anal canal which is a benign condition but can turn into a locally spreading type of cancer and squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal. These are the conditions that show as a lump of the anal canal. But any other lump in the bid can also come in this area. If it is hemorrhoids, earlier we used to cut these hemorrhoids called piles, we used to cut it and creating a wound and the wound would heal in 2 -3 months. But now we have a method called step hemorrhoidectomy to remove hemorrhoid masses. If it is sentinal piles of a fissure, we excise this and do an anal sphinctotomy. If it is cancer of the anal canal, it requires more treatment. Mostly because by radiotherapy alone or by surgical treatment which can be a very high end surgery.
