Known for his defiance of powerful cattle barons and his partnership with Ellen “Cattle Kate” Watson, Averell became a symbol of resistance against frontier corruption. Falsely accused of cattle rustling, he and Kate were lynched in 1889 by a group of ranchers led by Albert Bothwell. Their tragic story helped ignite the infamous Johnson County War and remains one of the most haunting injustices of the American West. LYRIC: Ballad of Averell and Cattle Kate | True Western Outlaw Love Story (1889) In the shadow of Ferris Mountain, Where the wind don’t tell no lies, Lived a man named James Averell With the truth behind his eyes. Born up in cold Ontario, But he found his fate out West, Where the plains could break a strong man’s heart Or put a fire in his chest. So raise a glass to stubborn hearts, To truth that never fades, To those who dared to speak their mind And never looked for praise. He served his time at Fort McKinley, Kept the peace with steady hand, Till Charlie Johnson drew his blade— A standoff on the land. He built a place by Independence Rock, With a saloon and store out front, Became the post and justice man For folks who bore the brunt. So raise a glass to stubborn hearts, To truth that never fades, To those who dared to speak their mind And never looked for praise. They called her "Cattle Kate" in spite, But she was pure and proud. They painted James a cattle thief To please the greedy crowd. Though headlines screamed of outlaw tales, Their names the lies betrayed— Two hearts were hung in Sweetwater, For standing unafraid. Bothwell rode with rope in hand, Backed by fear and steel, But justice never found its voice— Only what the rich men feel. Now Sweetwater’s still and quiet, But the story ain’t forgot, Of the man who stood, the woman too, For every small man's lot. So raise a glass to stubborn hearts, To truth that never fades, To those who dared to speak their mind And never looked for praise. Out where freedom met the noose, And justice came too late, We still recall the cowboy song Of James and Cattle Kate. Now the years have gone by, but their tale still remains, Of a man and a woman, who fought through the pain. In the heart of Wyoming, their spirits still roam, For the fight for the freedom, will always be home. Though the years have gone by, their story holds flame, Of two who stood tall through hardship and shame. Keywords: johnson county war, cattle kate, cowboy music, 1889 wyoming, wild west justice
