The “False Self,” a concept by D.W. Winnicott, is a defensive mask developed in response to trauma, particularly in childhood, to shield the vulnerable True Self. While protective, this False Self often prevents genuine self-expression and hinders the process of individuation, or becoming one’s integrated self. Trauma survivors may cling to this identity, fearing that revealing their True Self will bring further harm. In therapy, dismantling the False Self becomes essential, though challenging, as it entails facing painful memories and emotional vulnerability. Ursula Wirtz argues that by gradually sacrificing the False Self with therapeutic support, trauma survivors can pursue individuation, ultimately achieving a more resilient and authentic identity that integrates their trauma and fosters healing.
