This dives into labor union strikes over immigration. As immigration increased in the late 1880s and early 1900s, many workers - especially on the West Coast - began to worry about wages, job security, and their place in a rapidly changing economy. Labor unions grew stronger during this period, but their fight for workers' right often became tangled with racial prejudice and anti-immigrant sentiment, particularly toward Chinese and Japanese communities. We will talk about: How certain labor leaders like Samuel Gompers pushed for Asian exclusion. The Sam Francisco plague outbreak and how it fueled racist narratives. The role of politicians like Mayor James Phelan in promoting anti-Asian policies. The massive teamsters and waterfront strikes that brought San Francisco to a standstill. How economic fear was redirected toward immigrants instead of employers. The rise of Abe Ruef and the Union Labor Party, and how political corruption grew out of labor unrest. Why some workers tolerated corruption as long as their wages improved. This story shows how economic anxiety, public health crises, racism, and political ambition became deeply connected - and how immigrants were often used as scapegoats by people seeking power. When times are hard, it is easy for leaders to blame certain groups instead of addressing deeper systemic problems. History shows us the consequences of that and why it matters today.
