From audition vlog part 2 (end) - see • I went on stage and THIS happened... (orch... for full version. I recorded this after the final round as an example of what I wish I had played. The sheet music shows my markings from grad school, though I've changed many things since then. The biggest thing I changed between this recording and the audition was the tempo, which I took slower for some reason in the finals. It ended up working out for me in the hall, reverberating through the large space (make sure you're in tune!), but there is a joyful virtuosity it should maintain without bogging down, especially in the middle of melodic sequences. The right hand should never feel heavy or forced. The rests at the end should stay in a steady tempo and not rush. However, the C major chord after the last rests before the end should not be late. The scale at the end needs to move, just like the beginning, rather than slowing down. The 12-note scale feels incarnational - appropriate to Christmas, Jesus coming down to earth (spoiler alert, it happens twice!) The next few measures after the opening scale also have twelve notes, which align with the I-V-I harmonies. There is a playful rhythmic contrast between this and the high melodic notes of the phrase. I remember hearing in school that the 12 notes represent the twelve apostles, which is at least a nice musical idea. I had many sources of inspiration, but the two recordings I listened to the most during the audition days were by Colin Carr (1998) and Yo-Yo Ma (1983). #bach #cellosuite3 #bachcmajorprelude #violasolo #violasolos #violaexcerpts #orchestra #audition #violist #violateacher
