Arguably the most influential art movement since Pop, graffiti as we know it today was invented by teenagers. The convergence of street art and graffiti styles that emerged from housing projects, subway yards, and bleak suburban parking lots has become a global phenomenon. It continues to thrive and evolve forty years after it began. Yet even as graffiti is purchased by private collectors and hangs on the walls of museums it remains divisive. Depending on who's talking, graffiti is sneaky and dishonest, a crime, an alternative to painting, a whole miserable subculture, or a distinct way to convey an idea. Art in the Streets on MOCAtv features original work by JR, Barry McGee, Os Gemeos, RETNA, RISK, ROA, SWOON and more. The series also includes classic films from MOCA's "Art in the Streets" exhibition (2011) that captured important moments in the history of street art and graffiti by directors and artists like Henry Chalfant and Craig R. Stecyk III.
