A quote is a written proposal detailing how much the project is going to cost the client, with provisos and costs for ongoing work. It should also detail your expectation about payment, which is your payment schedule, and any other terms you would like to lay out. Before you start a project both yourself and your client should be 100% clear about what is and is not part of the project and the costs therein. The quote will protect you if the client changes their mind and decides to add more elements to the mural or makes changes above what you detailed in the quote. The Payment Schedule, which is part of your quote, will make sure your client is clear about when you need to be paid. I highly suggest you include a deposit as a part of your payment schedule to secure the job. This will make sure that you have the cash you need to buy supplies, and if you don’t get the final payment from the client, at least you’ve been paid something. Hopefully that won’t happen though! A deposit is also a great way to vet a prospective client - in my experience, any client who doesn’t want to pay the deposit or tries to get you to reduce it is a major red flag - it shows that they’re not serious about paying you and you should definitely think twice about working with them.
